Shane’s still off questing in Colorado, he told me he was going  kayaking yesterday. I haven’t heard back but I assume they successfully made it. I do love Colorado, it’s scenic, there’s lot’s of things to do all year round, and there’s nice people that will pick you up at your hotel and take you to the airport. I wrote about it last fall,  Aaron of DSAD was kind enough to give my a ride to the Denver airport. We had a nice breakfast and got to catch up in person. I also got a message from Steven Kennedy to meet up after he read my post that I was in his part of Colorado. We had already passed through, but I thought it was a nice of him to reach out, and I’ll defiantly take him up on the offer the next time i’m in the area.

Networking and building trust  in any business or industry, can lead to more than just enhanced business opportunities. In fact if you’re doing it right it will lead to friendships and free rides to the airport.

This afternoon I got one of those solicitation emails from someone trying to sell me a domain. I get them all the time, but the issue with this particular name was that I knew it had just gone up for auction on Dropcatch 30 minutes before I got the email.

One of the problems was that the domain linked back to the auction. I’ve gotten these types of emails before, but I’ve never had one that linked back to the real auction.

This strategy while misleading at best, seems to be a lot of work for a low percentage gain, not to mention the risk of buying it at auction and having them not pay.

Everyone of these is from an email address that has the domain parked at Godaddy with a generic lander. Usually it’s a different email each time I get one.

Does anyone  out there know of anybody that does this? I’m curious to know what their sell through rate is.

I wasn’t aware that domain.com and their resellers, dotster, mydomain, netfirms and probably a host of others, are selling their expired inventory through Godaddy auctions. I’m not sure if this is a new thing or maybe I did know and just forgot.

I can’t imagine the headache Godaddy’s having dealing with these stellar registrars, if their auction fulfillment is anything like their normal day to day operation. But their problems are another topic that could fill volumes.  As a side note, they are also Tucows resellers, so I imagine that inventory now goes to Namejet.

The reason that I was attuned to this the last couple of days is because I saw some of my names that are expired at Dotster and Netfirms come up at auction. I try and remove my names from any list that I publish, I don’t want to give the impression that I’m testing the auction or anything like that since I’m not, but it’s a lot harder to track, if the names are at other registrars.

Since I’m not the most organized person, I’ll see names and think “that looks good, I should add it to the list” only to find out that I own it. I knew it looked familiar for some reason.

IKE’S LIST OF DOMAINS AT AUCTION FOR Tuesday, August 1st

Another good Sherpa show published yesterday. Adam Strong said he liked the comment I posted after the last review, so I’ll repost it here for anyone that wants to read it. Shane also commented that he liked it  but he’s a team player and more importantly a manager of people and plants by trade.  He knows that encouragement is a motivator so you have to take it with a grain of salt :) .

I’m joking, Actually everyone one of us at DSAD will tell the others the truth or their opinion good or bad. It’s really the only way to accurately communicate. Sure, you can hedge, pick your battles, or even be tactful, but when it comes down to it, withholding something, not saying or doing something for fear of giving offense will hurt everyone in the long run.

A comment on bidding on auctions with bids approach. One thing to watch about bidding on auctions with bids because others think they have value so they must have value. Take a look at some of Godaddy auction names with bids. There are some terrible names with bids that you should never bid on. I can only assume that the people bidding on them hate their money, or they’re SEO’s and are buying the names for links and traffic.

If you don’t know anything about SEO, Pandas, Penguins, Possums, anchor text, link farms, or spam, don’t bid on these names just because they have traffic numbers.

From the last DomainSherpa.com  review comment

“Rajesh,

Suppose you paid $10 each for these names, they have no parking revenue and no inquiries then just drop them, because every single day you can find better names to register that are salable to a real person in business or thinking about starting a business. With these names you don’t have to over analyze, search deep for a prospective buyer, or do anymore pointless work. You can simply trade these names in for better ones.

It seems one of your tactics is trying to get ahead of the curve with new tech and ideas. If that’s the case then it’s super hard, even impossible to value any in that category, we’re talking about theoretical value and ideas. There’s high risk and high reward should they pan out, but until then they’re completely speculative.

Even within that category I don’t think super niche, exact match domains will be bought by any companies, not as brands and not as marketing names. They’re not call to action names, they’re not generic category names and they’re not buying keywords. (buying keywords are where the customer is ready to make a purchase or take action of some sort other than just browsing the web) If Shane decides to start growing plant meat in his greenhouses he’s not going to buy or use Plant Based Meat, let alone Meats. No one says “meats”.

You’re going super in depth into the analysis of these names, and I think it’s paralyzing you from finding low hanging fruit. When I talked about conquering the droplists, I’m saying that taking the time to thoroughly process a list has value. To Shane and Ategy’s point, about finding names that you alone like, I say, who cares. You’re not buying them right then and there, you are simply identifying inventory as quickly as possible and finding names that you like, could be used by a business, or anything at all that flags the name to you. Later you can go back and analyze the names at a closer level.

I’ve found that most of the names that I’ve sold are just that, names that I like for some reason coupled with an industry that will buy it. They might simply make sense for something, might be short and memorable, or a memorable phrase.

There are no real metrics associated with the vast majority of these names. We are not buying and selling longtail exact match domains right now, nor have we for some time. We are essentially selling some sort of brandable domain on all levels. Not just made up brands, but even the short EMD keyword domains are selling as brands.

Take Shane’s DustPan.com, the metrics on this domain (5K exact match) have nothing to do with the usage that shane envisions other than the idea that 5K searches a month show that it’s still a word that is recognized and used in everyday speech. The people typing it into google are actually looking to buy a dustpan. If Shane sells the name to a MultiNational company as a cleaning brand, those same people will still be looking for dustpans to buy when they type the name into google.

One thing I’ve found, doing the DSAD lists, selling domains on numerous platforms and even to other investors on namepros, is that I usually have no idea what will sell. Everyone has there own criteria, parameters, ideas, visions, life experience that they apply to picking domains and branding. Names I think are great will not sell wholesale and then will sell to an end-user 2 days later for thousands of $.

Also the idea that unregistered names will not sell is false. I’ve sold names on Afternic that were available to hand reg at the time they sold.

This is by no means an efficient industry, there is no way to track all the names and keep your sanity, we have no idea what people are thinking when they have an idea, the general population does not have a clue about domains, There is potential to make a profit just for finding and MARKETING salable names, all the buyer has to do is see the name and buy it.

We are in an industry that relies on timing, one that is so large our inventory contains every word in every latin character language, any word combination of any and all of these languages up to 64 characters. On this level our job is to narrow down as best we can names that will sell for a profit as easily as possible.”

Here’s another expired auction platform registrar change that I found yesterday: Cyger can add it to the list with the recent Domain.com change

It looks like Fast Domain Inc now sends their domains to Godaddy. The name that brought this to my attention today is  BitsHub.com. According to the whois record the domain is at bluehost, which I believe was previously sending their expired inventory to Snap maybe namejet.  I know I’ve won auctions from one of them that had names registered at Bluehost. I remember it really well because Bluehost kept sending me hosting ads.

I’m not sure if Bluehost is a fully accredited registrar or a reseller, as the registrar listed is FastDomains LLC. According to DomainSherpa.com  list of auction partners, FastDomains does not have a partner, but maybe that just changed.

Cheaper and faster then the emergency department, faster and more expensive then a Dr’s visit.  (*Note: I double checked emergent to make sure I was using it correctly. Apparently I wasn’t, as it is noted in several publications as a common error, mostly in medical writings, to use emergent as an adjective form of emergency. However there are other publications defining the word as “calling for immediate action, urgent”. So who knows if it’s right. )

Escrow.com

A new Domain Sherpa episode was published this morning. It’s fun to see the contrast of different styles between the “premium guys” and others. I think it’s great that Amaar and Frank  have confidence in their names to set those prices. Confidence and nerves of steal is really the only way to get those prices. I think that they were able to get to that level by working the lower end of names first. Frank talked about packaging a group of construction names, in the early days and selling them with a little sweat.

I’m certainly not opposed to shooting for those prices on certain names, and I do have an “out” by leaving the landing page without a BIN price. My main focus is moving and selling names because for me, having momentum and getting sales is more fun. As I progress I do occasionally put a really high BIN price on certain names.

My thinking has always been that pricing above 10K shrinks your audience down to a very small level, and that lower level is willing and able to spend money on aftermarket domains, just not that much. I’ve also found that if I put the work in, I can find lots of names that I think will sell everyday. It might not be the best course of action, I have no idea if I price every name I own at $25K if any would sell. I do think that the process I’ve followed has allowed me to better identify names that could sell for $25K and which ones will easily sell for a lower profit.

I’m glad that Ammar sold Vape.io, I own Vape.ly and hopefully in a few years North Africa will stabilize and someone will buy it. :) I hand regged it a few year ago.

Happy Birthday tomorrow to the best daughter in the world, Amiah. I love you with all my heart.

JoyAdd.com  Add Joy seems better

JrMac.com  only 5 letters but McDonald’s will probably have a problem with you using it.

It was good to see Mike Carson on the DomainSherpa review, though I have to say I missed the trucker hat he normally wears.

I hope no one out there burned their eyes out staring at the eclipse.

Space the Infinite Frontier with Harry Caray from Lisa Needs Braces on Vimeo.

There was a lot of crypto talk again which I think is a good thing. I’m no block chain expert and until a few months ago I had no idea what they were even talking about. With just a little bit of understanding it’s easy to see the huge potential of the space. Not only for improved transactions and cool sounding money, but for the endless possibilities that the concept is capable of accomplishing.

If there’s one thing that will hold back or ruin cryptocurrency in the US, it’ll be the government and their f’d up regulations and bureaucracy.  It’s already a bit of an issue, when it comes to depositing money on some of the exchanges or participating in an ICO.  I think a lot of this might just be that companies don’t want to get screwed or have to change things when the US decides to change one rule or another.

Seriously, the government can take anything and mess it up once they get their grubby inefficient paws on it. There’s the obvious examples like the post office. I know it’s over simplistic to compare them to companies like UPS or FedEx, but it shouldn’t be.

How can we have a business that works hard, innovates and makes a profit, while a subsidized government entity does the same thing for a loss. Well I guess there’s my answer, the one works for it and has to make it the best to thrive, while the other rolls on doing whatever they want with the endless supply of money they’re given.   There’s no incentive to make anything better.

Here’s another great example of the insanity of government that I might have mentioned before,  can’t remember if I have:

When I was in Iraq as a contractor, I got to see this first hand. I worked for the DOD as a firefighter, we were assigned to base and force protection only. We weren’t out driving around the countryside putting out fires, we stayed on the base.

Haliburton had the majority of the logistics contracts, I  worked for another company that had been subcontracted by KBR (At that time KBR was the Logistics subsidiary of Haliburton). KBR was tasked with purchasing the majority of resources and equipment needed to run the bases. As a side note, KBR subcontracted some portions of the logistics, usually a specific HR type needs, to other companies. I can only assume this was to make it look like there were numerous companies involved and not a monopoly.

Here’s how the logistic contract worked. KBR’s contract with the Army was set up with “cost plus” purchasing, so every dollar they spent on supplies they made a percentage of money. I don’t know what the rates were, but an example of cost plus would be buying the famous $500 milspec hammer and making $5 just for buying it.

What the hell kind of system is this? They were incentivized to spend as much money as possible.

I arrived toward the beginning of everything, at least logistically, at the end of the summer in 2004. When our Fire equipment finally started to arrive, (we waited for months using old army crap in Balad) it looked like they had opened an equipment catalog, closed it and said, “I have know idea what that stuff is, just buy everything.

In January 2005 I went to FOB Ramadi in the Al Anbar province, (the place Tom was talking about when Ramadi.com was up for auction). Our mission was to transition base fire and rescue services from the Marine firefighters currently operating in that role.  The equipment started to trickle in a few weeks after we arrived. The first apparatus that we received for our 2 square mile base were brand new bright red targets,   tanker, a medium duty rescue, and a Jeep SUV command vehicle. Additional apparatus arrived later.

We also got full shipping containers full of rescue rope, no less than 3 floating pumps and various other exotic firefighting equipment. Floating pumps basically draft water from a static water source as a stand alone unit. I don’t know of any department where I work or have worked, that uses these or has one. I’m sure there are some that I don’t know about and I can see them being useful for rural departments with large bodies of water, but we were in the damn dessert. There was no chance of ever using one of these stupid things let alone 3.

The tallest building on the base was two stories high, so thousands and thousands of feet of rescue rope was pointless along with the millions of $ of other equipment that was sent to us.

But for every unusable, pointless, piece of equipment they shipped to us, KBR was making money. This is how the government works, they spend money just to spend it.

They’ll study the shit out of something and then study the study just to see if they can make a better study next time. They make confusion and useless paperwork the key to ensuring continued funding of some worthless project that helps no one.

Another example, also in Ramadi, was the 80+ tradesman contractors that were living there. These electricians, plumbers, carpenters and so on weren’t allowed to do any work on the base for the military, do to a contract issue. Apparently there was some glitch in the paperwork, so while the Army was paying for them to live and work on the base, they couldn’t do anything other than make improvements to their own facilities. Basically they existed on the base building themselves a little village to live in and no point to being there.

This isn’t a political rant or a call for anarchy, it’s simply a first hand view of how government works regardless of the party in power.

Somehow, maybe out of sheer dumb luck or the ravings of a mad man, I’ve drawn a parallel of what the Us government will do to the blockchain and cryptocurrency if they get more involved and try and regulate it or the users.

Our thoughts and prayers are with go out to those in the path of the hurricane about to hit the gulf coast. If you live in that area hopefully you’re reading this from somewhere other than home. If you haven’t left yet or aren’t leaving, find something that floats and keep your head above water. Stay safe.

Main List

AirTests.com  A site for air quality products

AllFound.com  Looking for something that’s lost?

BoyWild.com

BridalBroker.com  A site for selling brides wholesale? What’s the going rate?

BugDetective.com  A pest mitigation agency, they look for the clues find the evidence and execute the sentence

CleanPuff.com    A vape name.  I know there’s talk about vaping not being safe or  not enough data to make the claim that it’s safer than smoking. Obviously not using any type of nicotine product is better for you, but come on, smoking contains carcinogens, carbon monoxide, and all kinds of other crap that’s not found in “water vapor” so it’s hard to imagine that it’s just as bad.

ClearMeter.com  Lot’s of things are metered, this one is done clearly

DigitalEco.com

Domainitize.com  An other domain domain, use it for your own blog

ErrorClean.com  makes errors disappear, like they never happened.

In order to prepare for the future and to enhance learning and to practice said learning, DSAD will start listing prices of domains in Satoshi. For example the starting price of most of the expired inventory  is $12 (sometimes $10) which is roughly 274K satoshi. The trick will be keeping track of the daily exchange rate, or average exchange rate depending on the exchange.

For everyone asking themselves “what the hell is he talking about”, a satoshi  = 0.00000001 BTC , so at the current rate of 1 BTC equaling $4325, $1 equals about 30K satoshi. This makes it easier than saying 0.0000003 BTC or something like that.

It does get confusing so try and keep up, but it’s important to prepare for the future.

Apparently the world will end today, I’m not sure what time, hopefully it’s after the auctions end and the commission is recorded. I’m not sure why stories like this even get published. A couple of random ass dudes that will have no credibility on Sunday get the media to write stories en mass about the world ending and even if they’re right no one will no be around to talk about it.  I guess it is fun to talk about since I decided to mention it.

If someone really does know the date of the end of the world, don’t even mention it unless it’s years away. It makes me think of the nuclear missle sirens in Japan and Guam. The siren goes off and you realize you have 45 seconds to live, how about just letting me watch the pretty glow before the end instead of the 45 seconds of shear terror.  I mean where are you gonna hide on an island that’s about to be hit but a nuclear bomb? Give me at least an hour and I can work with that, bury myself in the sand or something, but those missles fly too fast.

Well it looks like our friend “Stu” also known as Al Perkins and Wesley Perkins is back to his domain hostage tactics, putting Russian porn on expired domains bought at Godaddy auctions. He targets domains that were recently up and running as websites.

We can go back and forth all day about what a “responsible” domainer should or shouldn’t do with the expired domains they buy. As I’ve said before I think it’s reasonable to sell the domain back to the user for a reasonable price taking into account the time and money you’ve invested. If you choose to sell the name for an exorbitant price that is completely fine and entirely up to you.

But one thing that gives the domain industry a bad reputation is forwarding the domain to porn in an attempt to extort money from the previous owner.

Now, you could say “ that’s unsavory, but the new owner has the right to do it” and I’ll agree “sure they have that right”, but I don’t think it’s the “right” thing to do. I think it’s an asshole tactic used by douche bags that can’t make money in this industry through the multitude of available ethical avenues.

But what really pisses me off, is when the above named domainer forwards a name, frequented by children, a name that formerly was the site of an elementary school, to Russian porn. Yet again.

Perkins said it was a mistake the first time, and to his credit he quickly removed the offensive forward. I did not mention him by name in the first article or reference the domain in question, until the comments section where he raved on and on and identified himself.

The point of that article was to consider the affects of every action you take and to determine if said actions make you a more responsible member of society or not.  If you’re sales tactics include porn extortion, so be it, but you should make sure you aren’t harming children with your tactic. IF you did it by mistake the first time, just fix it, learn and don’t do it again.

Doing it a second time  either intentionally or by mistake is bullshit. You should be charged with corruption of minors and labeled a sleazy MF’r. There’s no excuse for it.

So once again, Stu Perkins has forwarded SevenSorrows.org a previously Catholic elementary school website, where kids visit everyday to Russian porn.

His extortion tactics have resulted in numerous articles from around the world that makes the aftermarket domain industry look like a bunch of pervert dickheads. So thank you Perkins for being an ambassador to the world for us all.

Here are some of his media mentions,

http://www.peacearchnews.com/news/211900221.html

http://www.mauinews.com/news/local-news/2016/05/maui-based-business-loses-its-domain-to-cybersquatter/

http://www.wipo.int/amc/en/domains/decisions/text/2010/d2010-0738.html

http://www.adrforum.com/domaindecisions/1363400.htm

The bottom line: be a creepy bottom feeding domainer if that’s your style, but don’t bitch when you get called out for it. In fact stand up with pride and say, “I’ll do whatever I want with the domains that someone else let expire, if it hurts kids well then that’s the fault of the school, they won’t make that mistake again.I’m actually helping people learn”.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims and all the families and friends of victims affected in the Las Vegas shooting. I was watching footage of the shooting and kept thinking “wow, I’ve been right in that area every January for the past several years at Namescon”, and something like this could have happened at anytime.

I say this not as a deterrent to living life or changing my behavior because of terrorist or extremist attacks, but rather to be prepared and situationally aware, to know how to react should something like this happen to me.

Being better prepared for an event like this can be as simple as knowing a few life saving concepts. The first thing to consider, and one that was not easily accomplished  in the Las Vegas attack, is to neutralize the threat. If you listen to the police radio traffic, several officers voice this concern while others are calling out the locations of the wounded. One of the officers summed it up great, saying we need to take this guy down before there’s more casualties.

If you can, move the patient and yourself to a position of concealment or cover as quickly as possible. Hiding behind something that won’t stop a bullet is preferable sitting out in the open, it will make it harder for you to be recognized as a target.

Another important thing to consider is the use of tourniquets. This could consists of a belt or anything that could be used to stop the flow of arterial blood coming from an extremity wound. Even if a victim has multiple gunshot wounds stopping the flow of arterial blood in the extremities will prolong survivability. For the longest time there was a stigma to tourniquet use, there was a misconception that the person might lose the limb if a tourniquet was applied. The fact of the matter is that loss of limb from a tourniquet is very low percentage and is insignificant when the alternative is complete exsanguination.

The tourniquet needs to be tight enough so that it stops the flow of blood completely. It also should be applied on the single longbone of the affected limb. Your femur and humerus are the single long bones, so any easy way to remember tourniquet placement is above the knee or above the elbow, obviously between the heart and the wound. The distal ends of your extremities have two main bones, this make it harder to compress the artery against the bone with the tourniquet.

One of the most inspiring things that happened during the Vegas attack were people helping people by loading them onto whatever they could find and taking them to a vehicle that could transport them to the hospital. The thing with regular Emergency Medical Service during an event like this, is that they will not enter the hot zone until it’s confirmed that the threat has been neutralized, and in reality most of the wounded don’t need an ambulance or even a Medic, they need to get to the operating room as fast as possible. If you stop the bleeding and control the airway the best you can, then taking the person to definitive care as fast as possible is the best treatment for them.  EMS Advanced life support is limited in its capabilities when dealing with trauma. Iv’s are essentially pointless and we don’t carry whole blood. Sure, I can give you fluids to assist with blood circulation (not as beneficial as once thought in loss of blood shock as it can diminish clotting factors),  decompress a tension pneumothorax or intubate the patient, but like I said, what  they really need is a surgeon.

If you come across someone that is not breathing, has no pulse and there are still other people wounded and breathing, leave them and move on to someone that is breathing. Technically you should adjust the airway and look listen and feel for breathing, but someone shot lying in a pool of blood, that doesn’t appear to be breathing and has no discernible pulse is more than likely dead.  The chances of successful resuscitation after traumatic cardiac arrest are very, very slim. It’s not a pleasant thing to consider, but your efforts are better utilized helping someone that has a chance. Obviously if the amount of rescuers matches or exceeds the number of patients then give it your best shot.

So if you take anything away from this post and find yourself in one of these situations, remember if possible to, stop the threat, get to cover, stop the bleeding, get to a trauma center. The more these attacks happen the more likely anyone reading this will find themselves in a similar situation and the principles can apply to any situation that you find injured people.

I made it to a computer just in time to finish this post. I spent the night on the water in DC, and caught this beast. The first blue catfish I’ve ever caught and it’s as tall as I am, if it could walk.

I just watched the first three seasons of House of Cards, so I imagine the fish grew to this size eating the bodies of political causalities, killed and thrown into the Potomac.

No crypto talk today, well maybe a little domain related crypto talk.  I’ve been selling names with “coin” in them like they’re going out of style, as well as a sale yesterday with the word “chain”. No crazy prices, the range is from around $599 to $2400 retail, with a few $59-$200 wholesale at Dropcatch.

Reading the comments from Shane’s post yesterday, Jeff stated he thought it might be better to invest in Crypto right now than in Domains and that he was having trouble selling his portfolio wholesale. It could be true for Jeff that crypto would have a better return than domains, I’m not sure what his situation is.

There are several points we can take away from this concept.  First, there are so many variables in domain investing that I have trouble comparing it to any other industry, especially block chain tech and all it’s intricacies.

Obviously we can make correlations in domain sales to other events like the strength of the economy, but since each one of these little bastards is unique unto itself, we’d have to judge each and every name on it’s own merits and then throw timing and exposure into the mix. If we did all this then we might be able to start comparing domains to other industries.

Selling domains at moderate retail prices is the best way to gauge the overall strength of a particular domain niche(IMO). For example, if I sell drone or vr names in the aftermarket that’s great, but I know I’m selling to the domaining crowd and selling into speculation. Niche speculation isn’t confirmed until I start seeing numerous examples of these names being bought on platforms geared to the end users.

I can take the data in my opening paragraph and have reasonable confidence that the crypto/coin space is going somewhere based on the spike in retail sales.  Maybe it’s just short term, but there’s definitely momentum in the niche.

Another thing to consider is the way we bandy about  the term “investor”. I think we need to make a distinction between “seller” and “investor”. Not that we can’t be both, but if your names don’t sell for minimum wholesale prices, then more than likely  they should be classified as product inventory, rather than an asset class of an investor. There’s nothing wrong with being a seller and carrying inventory, I categorize most of my portfolio as product.

Making the distinction between product and investment might help you sell more names as you will learn to set prices accordingly. The thing with investment domains is that you don’t need to sell them. You can carry them as long as you want because they have value as an asset that should/could appreciate. You will normally be able to get a decent price for them as long as your not trying to make bail, or if the timing is right you could score a big payday.

So to sum in all up, selling domains and investing in domains are two different things. Making this distinction can be helpful. Jeff, I’m not picking on you, rather I thank you for giving me something to write about. I think it’s a bad idea to try and liquidate your 4500 domains to move into a completely different, risky, investment instrument that you admittedly don’t know much about.  I think you should focus on the minimum $36K you’ve put into domains, sell some for reasonable retail prices, then take that money and experiment with crypto.  Just an idea, good luck.
