Has anyone tried MailBoxPark.com yet? I set up a bunch of names with the parking service at the end of Feb. It’s interesting to see all the emails your names get. I’ll follow up with more details in future posts, but so far for this month I’ve made about $30. They guarantee $50 a month with 1000 domains added to the service.  I learned about mailbox parking on DNW.com listening to a podcast.

It’s a little tricky setting up at first if you’ve never changed MX records in bulk, but it gets easier once you figure it out. The main thing I learned doing this is that the name servers have to be pointed to the default settings. You then change the A records to the IP of the old name servers, then change the MX records to the settings provided by MBP.

I trimmed down the long list so it’s easier to view. I added links to separate pages where I’ve added additional names. This should make the basic list easier to view, and if you want, you can view the rest of the list by clicking the internal link.

I received my first ever yellow DHL shipped envelope straight from Geneva, Switzerland the other day. Yep a UDRP.

I had already received the emails with the 200+ exhibits and got about 10 emails from Attorney’s offering their services to help me fight and win this epic battle against corporate domain hijacking. I declined their offers.

I’ve had a change of heart about my assumption that this was a case of a corporate power and greed. I now think it’s a case of legal service extortion with the corporation being the victim and with that said, still reverse domain name hijacking.

The domain in question is StayFree.xyz, apparently Stay Free is a brand for feminine hygiene products. When I registered these generic words for 50 cents, I was thinking about things like hotel accommodations or maybe “don’t go to jail”,  I wasn’t in any way thinking about small menstruation diapers or whatever the hell they sell.

I mean seriously they did a shitty job of branding that product. “Here’s our maxi pad so you can stay free”. Stay free of what? Menstrual fluid running down your leg? It doesn’t even make sense. In any case I know that I didn’t register the name in bad faith, because I didn’t associate this generic two word name with this or any trademarked product.

The legal firm contacted me about another name prior to the stayfree discussion. That name was binky.us. They showed me the trademark and I said, “hmmm I didn’t know that was a trademark, I thought the term was generic and I also mass registered those .us names, so here you go” I transferred the domain to them without any issue. I did this not because I had registered the name in bad faith, but because I wasn’t aware that it was a specific one word brandable that has no other use.

They then contacted me about stayfree.xyz. I said I agree with the other name, but this one is totally generic. There were no ads showing on the domain as there were with binky, even if there had been, no one would have seen them. The only traffic if any, a newly registered .xyz is getting is bot traffic, no one is directly navigating there.

The name was and still is listed on uniregistry market with a BIN price of $199 USD. So the corporation is willing to spend $10K+ for this law firm to file a UDRP, put the case together and take away my 50 cent .xyz, that is made up of generic words?  That seems like really bad business.

Why haven’t they filed UDRP’s on StayFree.net or StayFree.org? Both of those names are currently listed for sale and show ads for feminine hygiene products. Both of those names have been registered for over 10 years and have the whois set to private.

So was I an easier target for this lawfirm to generate work and billable hours? Are they out there trolling for domains that don’t have whois privacy?

The law firm owns their name in four legacy extensions. I just registered their name in 5 CCtld’s .lawyer and .attorney, so they can now practice filing real UDRP cases. In the meantime, I’ve built the names out into really nice Donkey Porn sites.

It’s 04:30 and there’s about a foot of snow on the ground already, the winds starting to pick up. As soon as I get this done I’ll probably go outside and shovel snow for the first time this year. I’m really close to the Blizzard warning zone, so it should be a fun day. I bet the auctions go higher than normal  with everyone stuck inside and bored.

I made a DSAD shirt yesterday, mugs are also available. Proceeds will go to my UDRP defense fund. lol I’m joking, if any of them sell we’ll donate $1 per unit to cancer research, I’ll send it to Cyger to  send in.

Stay safe and warm today. If you have chest pain, stop shoveling and call 911. Lot’s of people will die in the next few days from heart attacks during and after shoveling. I see it every year, no joke. Hire a kid or snow removal service if you have any heart issues.

Only 7 days left to get your awesome DSAD shirt or mug. It started as a joke, I used teespring.com to put the image on a shirt, but I needed to launch the shirt campaign to get the full image. So I said “why not, let’s do this”. We need 4 more orders to print.

It’s actually a neat business concept, you can design whatever you want for free and then sell the stuff with whatever marketing skills you have. There’s different tutorials on how to sell on different platforms. It doesn’t make sense to use them for regular or local screen print orders, you can find a printer in your town that’s a lot cheaper, but for small orders or concept shirts that you want to sell it seems to work well.

IKE’S LIST OF DOMAINS AT AUCTION FOR Saturday, March 25th and Domainer Ethics

Escrow.com

Domainer Ethics

Yesterday a friend contacted me about a domain that expired and was recently sold at Godaddy auctions. The name was being used for a Catholic elementary school website. It displayed upcoming fundraisers for the general public as well as internal school information for the students and parents to access.

Shortly after the completion of transaction, the domain that numerous children navigate to everyday, redirected to Russian porn.

I contacted the new owner of the domain, and they immediately took the porn redirect down, so I won’t mention which domain it was. It makes me think of the larger issue of domainer ethics and responsibility, not only to the industry but to society in general.

If Russian porn is how you make money, that’s fine, but if you’re going to use recently expired domains that had been running as websites up until the time they expired, make sure that they weren’t sites that targeted children.

I actually think that the porn redirect might simply be a sales ransom tactic. I found an article with a similar situation, the domain had expired and the previous owner found their real estate business  domain resolving to porn and basically had to pay the ransom to get the porn taken down.

I asked the new owners if it would be possible to get the School’s domain back for their website and they responded, “it might be possible, but it won’t be cheap, possible several grand”. I think that if you’re approached by a previous owner right after you obtain a name, especially if it was owned by a non profit organization, that it’s only reasonable to sell them back the name for a nominal price, taking into account your time and effort.

This brings up another point, the general public are clueless as to how a domain life cycle works. The school website didn’t resolve after it expired, but the volunteer that ran the site had no idea what the issue was. I’m sure they received several emails from Godaddy advising them that the name had expired.

We invest in domains to make money, some full time and some as a hobby. There are  plenty of opportunities to make money using ethical and non controversial methods.

IKE’S LIST OF DOMAINS AT AUCTION FOR Tuesday, March 28th and I traded Noah Kagan a domain for a hat

I traded Noah Kagan a domain for a hat and tacos

About a month ago I get this email from Noah@sumo.com about a domain. I have to be honest I didn’t know who he was the week before that email, but I had just finished listening to Mike Cyger’s  interview with Noah two days prior to the email.

Noah asked if the domain was for sale and that he was trying to help out a friend, by giving them the domain as a gift. The name wasn’t anything special to me and it was listed with a BIN price so I figured that he was obviously looking a wholesale price.

I replied with an asking price of one Million dollars, I figured that was his normal buying range. :) Instead of quoting an actual asking price or telling him to go to Afternic, I said I’d get back to him in a few days and that I was sure we could work something out.

I emailed him back and didn’t hear anything until he sent me another email 2 days later, asking what I had come up with. I thought that I had responded to him but my dumb ass had responded to myself in the gmail conversation thread lol. Watch out for that, the emails get threaded and it’s easy to hit reply to yourself. You would think this would be easy to spot, but it’s not if it just stays in  the thread.

Anyway, I responded again and requested the following terms for the domain.

Austin’s best tacos shipped in a cowboy hat

-A range of money from $100 to $500 contrasted with email marketing advice, tools, help that he had to offer valued for the difference. I don’t even know if that makes sense: so for example, if he values the domain at $1000, he would decide on some formula of money/marketing tools that he sets the value on. In this case he could pick $100 + $900 in marketing “stuff”

Obviously I did this more for fun than anything, but Noah agreed to my terms. He paid me $101, sent a hat from Amazon, had his assistant contact me and set up local taco delivery. Noah then said to start out going through the app sumo tools for phase three, which I haven’t done yet.

He asked me a few domain related questions about finding expired domains. I sent him a rather verbose response, he said that he liked the information and asked permission to use some of it in an article he was writing.

I think the main thing I’ve learned or maybe had reinforced from this experience, is that everything doesn’t have to be about money or getting the highest price. We don’t need to extract every last bit of copper out of our names. We can use them to help others by showing grace and giving them a domain they need, we can use them to network and build relationships and we can use them to strengthen relationships we already have.

I don’t know how many times I’ve registered a name off the drop because it made me think of a friend personally or their business. Even if they don’t want the name it doesn’t matter, it’s only $8, who cares.

Domain of the Day: impost.com Internet marketing post, instant message post or a one word domain meaning
“a tax or similar compulsory payment.

the weight carried by a horse as a handicap.”

Random thought of the day: I keep hearing public service announcements on the radio and online about train crossing safety. Basically they’re bringing awareness to the fact that a train can’t stop as quickly as a car, and that you shouldn’t try and outrun the train because you will probably die. They cite that number of times that death by train occurs every year.

On the surface it seems like a nice little ad campaign. You hear that ad and are reminded (just in case you forgot) that getting hit by a locomotive could be hazardous to your health. Below the surface it seems like a random and futile expenditure.

If you get to the point in your life where some governmental accrediting agency deems you worthy of a license to  drive and operate a motor vehicle, and you have yet to figure out that trying to outrun a train at a signaled crossing is a bad idea, then you will die one way or the other very shortly.

I mean the ad campaign would be better served with something like, “if you think you might be one of these future unfortunates that will die by train, please turn in your license today so you don’t hurt anyone else.

These are the same people that fall off the grand canyon while taking a photo,  get hit by a bus playing Pokemon go, or hang themselves by accident while masturbating.  It’s basically nature culling the population. If any of these people make it into their 50’s it’s an anomaly, the grace of God, or pure dumb luck.

Obviously people that don’t fall into this life category get run over by trains from time to time, we all have bad days, or in some cases the stars align, they break down on the tracks, their seat belt gets jammed and they get hit. If something like this happens the ad campaign won’t have helped them, fate killed them.

In any case, be safe at train crossings.

Escrow.com

BrandBucket.com just announced that they are changing their commission structure for names priced over $50K. In an email sent yesterday to BB users Michael Krell said the following

“Over the last year we have received many requests from buyers for premium names over $50K, but haven’t had the inventory to fulfill this demand. In an effort to attract the best names to our marketplace, we will be reducing the commission rate for names priced above $50K. Effective immediately, our commission rate for names priced $50K-$99K will be 20% and names priced $100K and over will be 15%. This change will apply to both current and future names on the marketplace.”

I think this is a great idea for the marketplace. They could probably go even lower with the commission for these type of names, I assume the work load is about the same for a 1K or 100K name, but it’s a good start and I think it will attract more high quality names.

In other BB news, I sold 2 names there in the last week or so, one made up brandable and 1 keyword brandable. A lot of people shy away from the normal 30% commission and I understand the concern, but my thinking is why care? There are always more names out there to find and sell, I want to be able to expose my names to as many targeted viewers as possible, sell them and move on. Keep the cash flowing.

I’d rather pay 30% commission on a few grand or under price a domain, than setting it on fire and off loading it for low wholesale on an auction platform when I need cash. Don’t get me wrong, selling on NameJet or Godaddy auctions is a perfectly find and potentially profitable sales model. But if I value and price some names on the lower end of reasonable and properly expose them to buyers, I can attract more impulse buyers and even some investors.

I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Here’s a tool that you might find useful for domaining and every day life. Headspace.com  is an app that helps you train your mind by taking 10 minutes out of your day. We often have trouble getting things done because we’re distracted, anxious or overwhelmed. Taking 10 minutes a day to train your mind to find  calm may be just the thing you need to be more productive.

We can’t work effectively if we are hungry or in physical pain, we remedy these situations by eating and visiting the Dr. But too often we ignore, to our detriment, our complete overall health specifically taking care of our minds.

So if you ever have a lot on your mind and it seems to be affecting your work, maybe check out this app, or find some other way to train your mind.

Tons of LLLL.com’s at auction today.

No you’re not reading the title wrong, and you haven’t lost track of time. It is indeed Monday and I’m doing the list while Shane runs 26 miles and 385 yards. I’ll probably never run a marathon, in fact I’d rather throw myself down a flight of stairs, or attempt self water boarding.

There’s a reason an 8 foot tall Kenyan wins the race every year, my short little legs aren’t built for marathons. I’d have to to move my legs 2 or 3 times more than the tall people just to make it to the end.  In any sport I ever played running was a punishment or part of the warm up, so I never understood running as a sport.

Besides I have a street bike and recently bought a new mountain bike, I bet I could beat every Boston runner riding my bike and drinking a beer. #worksmarternotharder.

While I justify my lack of running ability, I hope that everyone participating in the race is safe and has fun. I’m not even sure how it works, but good luck Shane, beat the Kenyans and win. Or beat the clock or just have fun, whatever you’re trying to do.

Domain of the Day: Liables.com

Main List

The No Bid List

911Live.com  This has police/fire scanner app written all over it. As radio technology evolves radio frequecy scanners can be very expensive. The scanners need to have the ability to following trunking. Trunking is basically a set of channels that use a group of frequencies within that channel group to transmit messages. The assigned frequencies carry the message to the appropriate channel. The benefit is that less frequencies are needed to operate numerous channels. If any case scanners need to be able to follow the trunked message. Smart phone apps can easily take the place of the radio scanner for free.

Sounds like a crazy day at the Boston Marathon, over 2000 runners were treated for heat related emergencies, that’s one crazy mass casualty situation.

I decided to get some exercise too and biked 17 miles yesterday. While I didn’t exactly need any medical attention my leg still feels like it’s on fire. I took the mountain bike out to a rails to trails path along the Susquehanna river. It’s a beautiful ride and the weather was perfect. Normally I use the street bike as the majority of the path is paved. There are other sections that are gravel and packed clay and I decided to do a little exploring on these sections.

After the blacktop ended the path turned into rough gravel, which really wasn’t very fun. I basically bounced along until I entered the packed dirt section, which was great until the path became about a foot wide and was 2 inches from a drop off down the bank into the river. I biked about 100 yards into the overgrown narrow section with roots every 5 feet and precarious drop offs, until I bailed on a steep downhill slope. I was going to keep going, but I soon discovered that I had fallen into a patch of burn hazel.

I’m not sure how widespread burn hazel ranges, or if it has another name in different locations. It has a chemical on the surface sorta like poison ivy, but this stuff starts burning right away. If you itch or try and wipe it off it the burn becomes more intense. So I decided to turn around and head back to the starting point. I didn’t make it the 26 miles 385 yards like I wanted to, (I was racing my bike against the Kenyans) but 17 miles still felt like a nice workout.

Escrow.com

I watched the latest DomainSherpa.com review this morning. I thought It might be worth taking the time to write down some of the main points I took away from the show. I think it’s a good practice in any learning environment to reinforce the things that you’re trying to learn.

On a side note, one of the main problems with teaching people anything, is that they’ve either forgotten how to learn or never really had good learning or study skills. In my real job we often have to precept students or new providers to help them reinforce the skills they learn in the classroom. One of the biggest problems they have is not knowing how to study or how to learn.

Spend time going through the lists even if it’s just for practice. Track names, see what gets picked up and for what price. It will make you better at finding names.

It’s ok in some cases to explain the name you see value in, unless you’re trying to explain it to the buyer.

If you have a ton of crap names or just ok names, you need to make sure that your sales price is high enough to cover the total cost of your names. Or buy better names that have a chance of selling at different price points depending on what you’re trying to do.

If you’re trying to make brandable names, there can only be so many variations. Multiple variations open the door for too many possible options thus making the name worthless. Especially in double keyword domains.

What’s your time worth? If you try and do outbound sales for crap names your wasting your time. Even if you scrap a couple bucks out of the effort, you’re better served letting them expire and finding better names or learning more.

Brandbucket will sell any domain with the word “tech” in it… lol just joking.

Brandbucket is looking for names that lend themselves to a tech startup rather than all brandable genres.

Look around and see if there’s better names available for hand reg than the one you’re thinking about buying.

I picked one of the terms used, Turf and found some names available for hand reg that might be better than TurfPal, not that they’d sell or that you should register them.

Escrow.com

I’ve been thinking about the point Drew made on the last Sherpa Review about the need to set the price extra high on a portfolio of sub par or average names, so that you can cover your costs in the event someone really likes one of said names and buys it. While I agree in principle with this concept, it needs to be looked at in a dynamic context.

What I mean is, that unless you bought all 2000 shitty names at the same time you’re not dealing with a static environment. I don’t think anyone starting out should buy 2000 names right off the bat, rather fine tune their buying and selling skills incrementally. As profits roll in from names priced to sell you can bootstrap that money into more names.

Obviously there are many factors, with the main wild card being the timing. The crappiest name in the world will sell if the right person comes along at the right time and likes it.

To illustrate my point, you buy 100 names over the course of a few days or weeks. Probably hand catching them off the drops for let’s say $10 to make it easy, or maybe you buy some in Godaddy Closeouts for $20. In any case your investment over this time period is between $1k and $2k. Reasonably pricing your names that you picked up cheap maybe around $999 or less and listing them every where you can, will help you move the names. If you aren’t selling any after several months, revisit the prices, make sure they’re listed appropriately and reevaluate the quality of your names.

If after several months of practice and learning you realize your names suck, set them on fire. Change the listings to $99 or less and home that someone adds it to their cart by accident. $99 on a $10 purchase is still a nice profit.

In the beginning you want momentum, that’s why I like buying cheap and selling cheap. Not only does it keep you engaged in the process, it helps you learn what to buy and what not to buy. You’ll get better at finding salable domains, you’ll learn what price points work.

One thing that’s often talked about is the holding costs, looking at the 10 year hold price of your names and calculating your expenses. The great thing with paying $20 or less for a domain is that you can trade it in for a better name rather than renewing it.

My problem with the advice to buy a $500 or a $1000 name to start, is that you have no idea what the hell a $500 or $1000 name even looks like, plus it takes you out of the game. If you spend your $1 to $2 K budget on 2 or 3 names I don’t think you’ll learn as much about the industry as you would getting in the trenches and mining decent names that will sell. This business really isn’t rocket science, but it takes practice, fine tuning and more practice. Skills can be developed and eventually turned into “muscle memory” but only if you want them to.

So in conclusion, don’t blow all your money on 2000 names that you’ll regret buying in a year, and don’t buy 2 or 3 expensive names when starting out. (unless someone that knows what they’re doing says “You have to buy this name, it’s the best deal ever”) But rather take the time to experiment and learn, take the earnings and roll them into more names and better names. Don’t buy any more names until you sell some. If you don’t sell any reevaluate your whole process, and price the names to sell especially in the beginning so that you can build momentum. This has been my approach and experience so keep that in mind, maybe something else will work better for you.

If you have your domains listed on Afternic with fast transfer BIN, log in and see if you’ve sold any in the last week or so.  Afternic is in the process of shifting to a new process, and sales emails aren’t going out for these types of listings.

It looks like they’re going through some upgrades, there’s a new format for the sold and escrow section. I contacted them to let them no I wasn’t getting the emails, so hopefully they’re working on it.

I learned there was a problem by logging in to the dashboard to manually transfer a domain, and saw that I had sold 3 instant transfer domains, but hadn’t received any sold emails. I logged in today and saw that another name had sold again with no email, so the problem hasn’t been fixed.

So log in and see if you have any surprise sales from the past week

Everything we say is based on our own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or our opinion is correct. We hand choose the names but we are paid to make this list by both the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links. I received a contact form submission from a new domainer named  Chris, he had some questions about BIN listings so I thought I’d answer him here. I also  can’t figure out what his email is, either I haven’t slept enough or the contact form isn’t working right.

Chris wanted to know if I list  domains with BIN prices on all the auction platforms. What I usually do, is list BIN prices on Afternic and SEDO, though I am way behind on adding names to SEDO.  SEDO doesn’t have a fast transfer agreement with Godaddy, and since the  bulk of my names have always been at Godaddy Sedo has kinda taken a backseat as far as my listing priority.  My intention is to change this and bring them up to speed.

I think some people might fear that the name will sell at both places at the same time. I think this is highly unlikely and if it does happen you would simply explain to one of the platforms what happened and cancel the sale. It’s not like they’ll flog you or anything, they’ll understand. If the name is at a registrar like enom, where they have fast transfer for both platforms, the first place the name sells will make the fast transfer status inactive on the other platform. Usually anytime there’s a whois change the fast transfer will be removed.

I don’t always put the same BIN price on different platforms. It’s surprising how many times a name will sell that is listed for a lower price somewhere else. The general buyer has no idea where to look, and if they do find the lower price there’s a chance they’ll think they’re getting a deal, maybe a time sensitive deal and pull the trigger.

So what I generally do is list the name with a BIN price anywhere that the potential buyer is searching for a name, like on a sales platform or in the registration path. On my landing pages I typically don’t have a BIN price. I may be losing some sales, but my reasoning is that  someone who directly navigates to a domain with the possible intention of purchasing said name already had that specific name or concept in mind. The buyer is more likely to negotiate and is less dissuaded my a make offer format.

This happens all the time, I’ll sell a name through a landing page inquiry at uniregisty for more than the name was listed  on the auction platforms. The buyer isn’t browsing names, so while it may be likely that an impulse purchase can still take place there’s a chance to sell the name for more than is listed elsewhere.

Just the other day I sold a 6L brandable name for $2500 through the Uni brokers, and the name was listed at Godaddy and Afternic for $599. When the $1k offer came in, I changed the BIN prices in both places. The broker was able to negotiate the price to the final sales price.

Chris also asked about the BIN names that I list. They aren’t my names, just random listings of name I think might have value at the listed price.
