DSAD.COM: IKE’S LIST OF DOMAINS AT AUCTION FOR Tuesday, December 27th

Escrow.com

I know Godaddy’s been updating their code and working on their site, but I’m still having registration problems. The bulk registration is still buggy, names I know are available and even showing available won’t process. The past few days my whole cart would empty telling me that the names weren’t available. In the past the “unavailable” name would be removed, problem is the names are actually available. Hopefully the get it fixed soon, every time that happens, I just register the names at Uniregistry.

Escrow.com

Happy Last Day of 2016. It’s the 366 day of the year for those keeping track.

I made a meme of an email I got yesterday from Register.com,It made me laugh.  If I renew now I can save a whole buck and only have to pay $37! Thank you so much for your generosity web.com. lol.

This is interesting: I found this domain DropCatch.click at auction on NameJet and my first thought was “serioimg_6490usly” What the hell are you gonna do with this? DropCatch.com obviously has a TM and will just take it if you use it for anything.

So I looked it up on Trademark 247 and to my surprise the term DropCatch.com has 2 trademarks both assigned to DropCatch.com LLC of Denver but both are status as “Failed to Respond”. There is one active TM on DropCatch without the TLD and it’s for a company that makes beer glasses and related items.

I’m no lawyer, but does this mean someone could use the .click for a similar service adding the .click to the official name? I’m sure there’s some sort of existing usage clause, but does that count if you started a TM never finished it or let it expire?  I have no idea, just curious, but like I said at first I totally wrote the name off as registered in bad faith, but it appears to my untrained legal eye that it’s legitimate.

Escrow.com

I sold another .us that I bought during the 10 cent promotion, so I’m now clearly in the black on that experiment after 3 months. I sold this one for $399 BIN at Uniregistry. If the name lives there you can sell the names instantly and only pay a 10% processing fee. It’s all automatic just like Godaddy premium or Afternic or Sedo fast transfer. All you have to do is set the BIN price, the buyer checks out and you get an email.

This name wipc.com is up at Snap but the registrar is Register.com, I thought they all went to NameJet?

And, lol, after my last post talking about the renewal prices at Register.com, I want to be clear, in case there’s new domainers reading this; No domainer anywhere in the world that wants to make money intentionally registers or transfers their names to any web.com registrar. We get some older legacy names at auction usually NameJet, but apparently still SnapNames too, that live at registrars like Netsol and Register.com.

These names probably expired and went to auction while the owner was waiting for the authorization code to arrive via carrier pigeon.   Or maybe they lost their internet connection navigating through the 18 pages that appear prior to even getting to a page where you can request the auth code. There’s also a field they want you to fill out that tells them why you’re transferring the name.

You don’t have to fill it out. I used to write things in there like “you suck, I hope your building burns down and all your servers melt” or “every time I deal with you guys it makes me want to punch babies in the face” or “Your company is the reason why terrorists are trying to kill us, thanks a lot”  or ” I’d rather throw myself down a flight of stairs before I’d ever renew this name here” but I gave that up a long time ago and just ignore that field.

So just to repeat one more time so everyone understands, no successful domainer intentionally uses a web.com registrar.

Over the last couple of months I’ve really gotten behind on my Godaddy renewals. A couple people have reached out to remind me, “hey jackass your LLLL com is going to auction” and I really appreciate that. I got really behind and was pushing the date back before I’d renew the domains.

I used to have everything on auto renew, but that got crazy when I’d have a thousand $ bill I wasn’t expecting full of a lot of crap I never meant to renew. My Godaddy rep’s were always good at deleting stuff I didn’t want as long it was within a few days, but I turned off the auto renew, so I was less of a pain in the ass.

I still miss stuff and have to transfer it out at the last minute, and I’m so unorganized I’ll see names on the expired list, think “hey that’s a good one” only to later find out that I already own it. So if I list any names on here that I own myself it’s not intentional, it’s just that I’m “special”.

I booked my flight for NamesCon today. I ended up going with Spirit, initially not because it was the lowest price, but because it was the only non-stop flight from Philly with the best times.

As it turns out it was the lowest base price flight, which is really a total scam. They charge you for everything, carry on, check bag, choosing your seat, the bathrooms are like vending machines you have to swipe a credit card to open the door, then once again for toilet paper. I paid an extra $60 each way for seat in what other airlines call first class, it seemed like a really good deal to me since half the other seats were $18 extra anyway.

I had an interesting day with domain sales yesterday, I sold 2 domains at Afternic and one at BrandBucket.  The first name at Afternic was a com with a really low price, right around $300. When I went transfer the name it wasn’t in my account, I did a whois search and there wasn’t any… I tried registering the name at Godaddy on my phone and I got an error message.

So I pulled up the Uniregistry app and there it was, the name was available to register.  I registered the name and  I thought “this has to be a mistake, the sale will never go through”. Well it did according to Afternic, they accepted the push  into their account.

Several important questions arise, How the hell does someone buy a “premium” domain that’s available  to hand register? Shouldn’t the system have known it was available? Did I do the right thing? Should I have told them that it was available to register? With Afternic you never know who the buyer is so that would have been difficult.

The second name sold at Afternic was a .us, one of the 10K I bought for 10 cents each. I had it listed for $999, but only $399 on the Uniregistry landing page. They bought it for the $999, you’d think a buyer would type in the URL before they blow $1k on a .us.

And finally watch the Godaddy cart, I don’t know if I jacked up my settings somehow, but there’s a damn window that pops up before checkout that has privacy checked on it. I almost put an order through today with privacy on everything in the cart. I was trying to move fast and almost missed it.

Heroin is easier to get when the Dr’s stop giving out the Rx’s,  lets sell narcan so when they overdose someone is there to push atomized narcan up their nose. Big Pharma laughs all the way to the bank, they get paid coming and going. This is what I would say if I was a consiracy theorist, but like I said I’m not.

This has been the worst year I’ve seen in a while for general sickness. Not the normal full out flu but more respiratory and sinus infection type stuff. I had it around Christmas and New Years and was just starting to get better. Then I had a fever again yesterday of 103 F. The funny part is how I got sick.

My 7 year old daughter had a fever at school and was sent home. No vomiting, only lethargy, fever and stuffed up nose. She was sitting on the sofa convalescing, watching cartoons. I sat down beside her and she licked my arm. I said “hey why’d you do that, your spreading your germs”! She said “I know now you’ll get sick and you can stay home from work with me.”

Well, valid point and her poisoning worked.

Another fun filled day at Namescon, In the picture on the right Travis and I had dinner with Gilmore Girls actor turned domainer Brian Burke. We had a great time over dinner talking about all kinds of things. It made me think about the real value of any kind of event like this is building relationships and networking. Really getting to know others in the industry so they’re not just auction handles or email addresses in our minds but real people that we can relate to and interact with.

I had an uneventful trip home from Namescon, but I do have a word of advice about Spirit Air. They tricked me into paying for a first class size seat for a regular seat that didn’t recline but with no one sitting in the middle. I was in row 2 and when I booked the flight and paid for the seat upgrade, there were only 4 seats across row 2 not 6.  Oh well, I slept the whole time anyway.

The trip home was nothing like the trip to Vegas. I was sitting in the first row in my appropriately sized first class type seat. (I say first class type seat since Spirit doesn’t actually have first class). The guy next to me was friendly and immediately introduced himself.  We talked for about an hour and a half about our regular jobs and life in general.

Finally I asked what he would be doing in Vegas. He started out by saying that his brother in law was involved in Hatzalah Baltimore and I soon as he said that I asked if he knew Lonnie, turns out Lonnie was who he was talking about. So for the rest of the trip Jonathan Bierer and I talked about domains and how he was helping the Lonnie’s family manage the domain portfolio. He was coming to Namescon to learn about the industry and network like everyone else, but with the main goal of helping his extended family.

I thought that was pretty cool. There’s nothing like seeing people pull together after a tragedy, helping those that need help by giving of themselves and their time. I wish Jon and the Borck family all the best with figuring out the best way to manage and sell the domains. DSAD along with many in the industry will be available if needed to help them in any small way that we can.

You know that oxygen mask that falls from the ceiling in the event the cabin depressurizes? On Spirit it won’t drop without a swipe of a credit card. The guy sitting behind me asked the flight attendant if he could “fly the plane for a bit” There was an exchange of money and next thing you know he’s heading to the cock pit. I actually saw 20 to 30 people get out of the cargo hold when we landed. One guy was dragging his buddy by the arm, apparently his coat wasn’t warm enough and he froze to death enroute.

Escrow.com

It felt like my birthday today going through the NameJet list. The normal 9-10K worth of .com’s was down to around 6K, and it appears that there were no BuyDomains names with the crazy retail reserves. This made it so much easier to search through the list. I even back-ordered 10 names last night because I didn’t have chest pain from the $1K+ reserve every time I clicked on a name. Hopefully it stays this way or they drop their reserves to reasonable prices.

Next up on the list of things to change is the Godaddy auction process, I talked about this before. I talked to Joe Styler at NamesCon over lunch and pitched my idea for investors to be able to reap the benefits of the Godaddy expired auction process. I’m wasn’t talking about profit sharing but rather an opt in for investors to let their names go all the way through the auction process with Godaddy only taking the standard 20%. He said they had experimented with profit sharing in the past, I think the rate he quoted was around 50%. Joe said that nothing really benefited the company, like increased registrations or less transfer of names to other registrars.

I suggested that this is comparing apples to oranges.  If I was able to opt in and agree that I wouldn’t renew the name or transfer it out after the auction, while knowing that I’d get the standard return after the sale, I wouldn’t ever move my names to any other registrar. My names would be on equal footing with the rest of the Godaddy expired inventory. There wouldn’t be a different starting price, or “traffic” numbers to compete with. I would purposely let names expire just so they would go through the auction. The amount of good Godaddy expired inventory would rise.  For any name that I own that lives at Godaddy I wouldn’t even consider any of the other auction platforms, because I wouldn’t need to.

One other take away from our conversation was how the auction system deals with names that it considers “adult”. They don’t show up in the regular feed. I tried auctioning a few numerics that contained 69 in them. They only got 1 bid and weren’t searchable through the standard API feed because they had been flagged as adult. So be careful what you list at auction that falls intentionally or unintentionally into the adult category. You may not get as many eyes on it as your would like.

They added a Starbucks to one of the local grocery stores, which is great if you like over priced coffee like I sometimes do. A word of advice; buy the coffee after you check out.

I thought it would be nice to shop for food while drinking my coffee. When I got to the check out an older gentleman was running the register, but he may have been the slowest grocery store register operator I’d ever seen. No big deal, I didn’t have anywhere to be. I set the coffee down in the bagging area and started bagging my groceries. A bottle came rolling off the belt towards the coffee so I grabbed quickly grabbed the cup to avoid my expensive coffee from getting run over by the can.

I squeezed too hard when I made the grab, the lid popped off and the cup overturned in the bagging area. Coffee was running everywhere and there was a significant coffee pond developing. I alerted the cashier with an “excuse me sir, do you have any paper towels?” He looked up from a package that he was closely inspecting, trying to find the bar code, saw that I had made a mess and handed me One paper towel. Eventually we got it all cleaned up, but I’ll refrain from buying coffee pre-check out until they add cup holders to the carts.

My happiness that Buy Domains names with the crazy ass reserves being removed from Namejet was short lived. They’re back with their 5 thousand a day clutter causing, retail priced domains. My new conspiracy theory is that not only are they using the platform as a advertising venue for their retail inventory, but they are also using the huge influx of clutter to pick up the rest of the inventory without competition.

Think about it, they have the whole system so backlogged with their crap that other buyers get discouraged and give up looking. That allows them to easily pick through the remaining no reserve names with no competition. They obviously know which names they own so they only have have the other inventory to search through. It’s brilliant.

I’ve added a section at the bottom of Godaddy BIN names all under $1k. They range from $50 to $999 with a big group of listed at $399. I think most of these names are undervalued and could possibly be sold for a profit. So take a look and see if you find anything you like.

Here’s one from the list, TheLosers.com priced with a BIN of $750 and has a $12K estibot.

Escrow.com

I had another decent week with BIN sales on Godaddy Premium, Afternic and Uniregistry BIN market listings. I sold 3 names on Godaddy Premium ranging from $250-$999, 1 on Afternic for $1699, 2 at Uni a .us and .pro for $399 each. Plus I have several names in escrow either waiting for payment or instructions from the buyer as to where they would like the name to go.

When dealing with this level of name I think you need to price them to sell keeping in mind he need to appeal  to the impulse buyer. Sure you may undersell names, leave money on the table or whatever you want to call it, but there are always more names to find and sell.

One other point to consider, domainers will put  high retail prices on names and when they don’t sell they’ll wholesale them off at Namejet or another auction platform. There’s nothing wrong with this, especially if you’re trying to keep the cash flowing.  I think with the right buyer those names could sell someday at those high prices, but maybe consider lowering the BIN prices instead of wholesaling them for peanuts.

Try setting the price somewhere in the middle or at the lower end with a selection of your names. Think of a price that seems fair, gives you a healthy profit margin, and one that may help entice a potential impulse buyer.

One thing that I keep seeing over and over again in my domain selling experience are domains selling for prices higher than they are listed for on other similar selling platforms. I’ve mentioned a few examples in the past and I just had another one yesterday. A domain sold for several thousand dollars more than it was listed for on another platform.

I’m sure this goes the other way, with names selling for less, just as much or more than they sell for the higher prices. Obviously I have no way to track the number of domains that sell for less, but I think the main point to take away here is that you don’t have to price your names the same on all the different platforms.

I think that having different prices can have a positive psychological  effect on the buyer. Say the savvy buyer checks all the different platforms and finds the name for less on one. There’s a feeling that they’re getting a deal. This works particularly well when the lowest price is on a sales platform that has the instant buy it now option. We can use this to maximize the impulse purchase.

If the buyer isn’t that savvy, so be it, they’ll pay more for the name than they would have had they looked around. I like to leave at least one platform make offer, if the buyer comes in and makes a higher offer than what the domain is listed for other places, quickly change the price.

I don’t usually consider the commission rate in the price, I try to set the price to a fair value or at a price that might increase impulse sales. This is mainly with buy it now platforms, particularly with instant purchase systems. The sale is more likely to complete when the buyer has less hoops to go through.
The average person buying domains for a small business or personal use has no idea how this all works. If fact many of us don’t really know how everything works, every sales platform, registrar, tool, has it’s own nuance that we each have to learn and adapt to.

Domain of the Day Lectures.com maybe an app for college lectures or learning in general

Have a name at auction and need more exposure? Send me an email. We Charge $10 per name per day. We may be able to help. If you have an auction you want to promote, email us for details.*All names chosen by us, Shane and Josh . (ie you click through and purchase a name you like) or an occasional paid listing. Everything we say is based on our own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or our opinion is correct. We hand choose the names but we are paid to make this list by both the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links. Keep that in mind and only buy names that YOU think are good

Escrow.com

I had a few problems trying to register names at Godaddy today. The bulk search only worked a fraction of the time.  The few times it did work I went through the purchase process like normal and I got the normal email receipt for the purchase, but then about 10 minutes later I used Uniregistry to bulk check a list of names and found the ones that I thought were registered at Godaddy were still available. So I registered them at Uniregistry, checked and they were indeed in my uniregistry account. Later in the afternoon I received emails from Godaddy that the registrations had been unsuccessful.
Not sure what happened, did anyone else have any problems?

The Godaddy Value BIN names today are all under $399. I think all of them will sell for higher at some point. DotConsultant.com  and NamePerfect.com seem like  good domain brokerage names.  I like FinalProject.com as some sort of college or high-school resource or brand, everything usually builds up and culminates into the Final Project.

Here’s my latests business idea: A consulting business that registrars hire to find bugs and glitches on their websites. I don’t know if I spend too much time on these particular sites, but I inadvertently find the shit out of glitches everyday.

Godaddy’s a no brainer, they should hire me to find and document these issues. Problem is it would be an 80 hour per week job, and I really don’t have time for that. Even Uniregistry would keep me busy most of the day.

Here’s a few Uni issues that need to be fixed. I can’t mark a domain as sold if I sell it myself. I’ve asked about 10 people at Uni and no one can figure it out. Bulk domain selection has a few problems. If I filter out certain names, and click edit all, all of the names get selected, even ones that weren’t filtered. Another issue is the names registered at Uni when added to the market aren’t showing up as Uni names, you have to go back and reselect the names after adding them to the market.

No system is perfect, all will have problems from time to time. It they don’t hire me to find all of their problems, I think companies should at least have a group of third party users that are always trying different things to “break” the system. They should do this not to highlight flaws but rather as a quality control/quality assurance mechanism.  Maybe they are doing this, but I find it hard to believe they are if my laptop and I can find problems everyday.

AmusedLife.com

BestCookout.com  might not be worth that much money, but it makes me think of big fundraising events in the summer. There’s one close to where I live that’s supposedly the biggest chicken BBQ in the world. They sell a lot of chicken but overall it’s a big cookout for thousands of people. This name might not be right for them, but there’s probably a similar event that could benefit from a good name. I know they spend thousands in ads every year.

Improve your domain finding skills.

My daughter is playing Softball again this year, it’ll be her second season. When I look  back and contrast her first practice ever to the last game of the season, I could see a marked improvement in her skills and level of confidence. They only practiced once a week, so it’s not like they had these 6 year olds bleeding softball, but you could see individually and as a team they were all better than when they started.

As with most things in life, the more we do them the better we become. The deeper we delve into whatever it is we are doing the more our skills and confidence increase.

Domaining is no different. I’m not a domaining expert, but I’ve found different things that work. I try and take these concepts and skills and develop them. It might not even be a deliberate cognitive thing, but when I break it down I can see different milestones, points along the journey.

When we’re trying to learn something, we take in all kinds of information from many different sources, we try and process all these different concepts and turn them into our own style, one that works the best for us. Often what people don’t do is push these concepts and skills to the max. A lot of times it’s because we get distracted or discouraged. Maybe we haven’t sold anything or we paid a lot of money for some BS name that will never sell, or there’s some new shiny object that steals their attention.

So here’s my challenge to hone one major aspect of domaining. This week work the shit out of a drop list. It doesn’t matter which one or which tool you use. Pick a day where the names are dropping or auctioning several days out. Forget about dates, metrics and all the other distractors. Don’t get bogged down on any names, if you think there’s hint of value or you just like the way it sounds highlight or mark that name. After you’ve gone through the whole list, do it again a different way. Then the next day, do the same list again a different way. On the third day gather the names that you picked, think about why you picked them and why you think they had value.

I think if you do this several times you’ll learn some valuable things. You’ll be able to identify the best ways that you find good names. You’ll learn things about yourself, like what time of day or what setting works the best. What frame of mind were you in? Were you tired or distracted?

Write what you learned down, then do it again and again. Finding good domains is the most basic fundamental of domaining.  Learn how to do this first, then worry about everything else.

Lot’s of good names at auction today without any bids.
