I’ve been at work all day and didn’t have a chance to read any domain related news until this evening when I read Shane’s post from this morning. My thoughts and prayers go out to Lonnie’s family and friends. My heart breaks for the children and what they must be feeling right now, and for Lonnie’s wife and the profound sense of loss that she must be feeling. From my time talking with him I believe that they live in a strong community that will lift them up and take care of them.

To expound on what Shane said, Lonnie and I did have a great conversation about all kinds of things. We were sitting in the hotel lobby watching football and drinking the beers that Berkens was buying. We talked about the EMS system that Lonnie was apart of, that I was a part of and in Maryland in general. We talked about people that we both knew, a man named Ashur in particular that was now living in Baltimore, volunteering with Lonnie, but who had previously volunteered in Lancaster where I worked at the time. Lonnie told me that his wife was from the town next to where I live. We talked a little bit about Israel, though I’m not Jewish I lived in Israel for about 4 months in the Negev milking cows on a Kibbutz.

Though I only knew him for a short time I am saddened by his death and I do appreciate the conversation we had. I think it says something about his character, that in a very short window of time, he made a positive lasting impression on me while we shared common interests and beer. That’s really the whole point of a conference, networking is one thing, but really getting to know others in the industry, who they really are beyond domains is priceless.

Really big list today, you can use the table of contents links to jump to a particular section. There’s a ton of LLNN NNLL some with bids. Most have been getting backordered lately or at least picked up quick. I’m not sure if they have value in the future, most of them are registered in .CN and have an older whois or archive date, so I guess they were used at some point. They might be worth getting once they go to closeouts, if you order closeouts in groups of 5 you save $1 on each, dropping the price to $4 + 8.37 (or whatever it is) let’s round it to $13. That’s cheaper than a backorder most places.

The non chip 6n’s that are dropping are also getting picked up right away. There was 2 days were they weren’t caught by the dropcatchers, but since then they have been. I’m not saying to buy any, just sharing my observations.

I’m going to start off today highlighting the first 50 names in our DSAD NameJet Auction.

BuyDomains has had a ton of names on NameJet recently. Yesterday I went through and highlighted all the Namejet names that I liked that were ending. When I went to NameJet to order/see if there was a reserve, I found that around 75% of them were owned by BuyDomains and had a $1000-$2000 reserve. The last couple of months have been similiar but the reserves last week were $500-$1000.

Over the past month I haven’t seen very many of theses names with any bids. They’re good names, but I don’t think investors are going to pay that much wholesale for them. Maybe I’m wrong and they get bids in the last minute, but I stop tracking them after I see the reserve.

If you want to setup a home aquarium and save money, don’t buy the fish, catch them. Bluegill work well and are fun to watch. I’ve had two small bluegill and a bunch of crayfish in a 10 gallon aquarium since the beginning of summer. You can feed them worms, insects, bread, anything really.

In the picture one of the bluegill is trying to swallow a crayfish, it’s the first time he’s tried. He had to know that thing wasn’t going to fit. I think he’s just a bully, he chases the other fish around sometimes. The crayfish made it out of the ordeal unscathed, though shaken up a bit. Seriously he had the crap shook out of him.

Last month I talked about buying $1000 worth of .us domains that were on sale at Uniregistry for 10 cents. I’m over halfway to breaking even, I sold a second domain for $250 yesterday and I’ve made around $150 in parking.

This is kinda funny. I received an inquiry a few days ago on LoveTrump.com. I hand registered it off the drop list a week before the election. Thank you Pollsters lol.

It’s almost Thanksgiving and it was 66 degrees F yesterday, can’t complain about that. I’m working today and we have the big JFK race going through my part of the county. It’s a 50 mile race that runs on part of Appalacian Trail, up mountains and then along the Potomac river. Hopefully we won’t have to drag and of these poor bastards off the mountain.

As I’m looking through the NameJet pre-release lists for names ending tonight at 23:00 EST, I find myself getting increasingly frustrated with the amount of decent names that have reserves of $1000 to $2500. When I say decent, I mean worth ordering for $69, maybe bidding to a few hundred dollars. I certainly don’t mean “decent” as in coming anywhere close to the minimum reserve of $1000.

I looked into it further, I mean who the hell is putting all these names on NameJet, essentially clogging up my search for value by putting a crapload of domains on a wholesale platform at retail prices. Buy Domains, that’s who. I mentioned before that they had numerous listings on NameJet, initially the reserves were in the $500 and under range, now there are tons of names, both decent and crap with all the reserves over $1000.

I pulled a random list of 500 names ending tonight, and did a bulk whois check. 150 names out of the 500 I checked are owned by Buy Domains, have a reserve over $1000 and some are for sale right now on their site and Afternic for a price within the reserve range.

Take for example TheRetard.com. Pre-release ended tonight with no bids, and a reserve range of $1000 to $2500. The damn thing is for sale on their site and Afternic for $1588.

That is 30%! Like I said it was random and not scientific but let’s use it; Why are 30% of the names at NameJet owned by Buy Domains, all with unrealistic wholesale prices?

Are they using NameJet to market their names, gain exposure and sell them on a wholesale platform for retail prices? That seems pointless, but who knows maybe they sell a few this way. What I do know is that it is clogging up NameJet with loads of unsaleable names in a wholesale market.

It has to be hurting overall sales on NameJet. Anyone sorting through the list is going to get slowed down by ⅓ of the names having retail prices. They will miss names that have value at a wholesale price. The good/realistic names won’t sell or will have fewer bidders.

I listened to the Domain Sherpa podcast today and I have to say that when those four are together they make my favorite Sherpa reviews. They have good symmetry and compliment each other while having diverse domain styles and backgrounds.

I’m excited to see what Frank brings to the table with the new app and the idea that lower priced names need to have a low resistance flow for the buyer. I recently changed some things on my uniregistry landing pages that I think might be in tune with the direction they’re heading.

For some time now, I’ve been wondering why there’s extra hurdles the buyer has to jump through for names that you’re trying to sell for $1 to $3000. We know that premium priced domains in the registry path get bought because it’s easy. The buyer adds it to their cart and checks out.

The changes I made on a large chunk of domains was setting them to BIN only and changing the for sale banner on the landing page to list the price. So instead of “This domain may be available for sale” I put “This domain is for sale for $999”. It’s the same concept as the premium listings, the potential buyer sees the price, says “what the hell, I can afford that”, clicks the link and buys it. With names registered at Uniregistry the buyer can check out right there, no need for escrow.

I only made these changes a few day ago, but it was interesting to see that Frank was talking about something similiar on the show.

The other day Raymond Hackney started a series on TheDomains.com entitiled The Good the Bad and the Ugly, the first post in the series was about Godaddy. I posted some of the things that I like and don’t like about Godaddy as a whole. The thing that people seem to like the most about Godaddy is the customer service, and I have to agree, I usually have a great experience anytime that I need help. The thing that caught my attention in the bad category was the amount of people that don’t like that the a name can still be renewed after the auction ends.

I can understand how that can be frustrating and it’s happened to me many times. On the other hand I’m guilty of renewing or transferring names out after they’ve gone through the auction process, usually it’s because I’m behind. I used to have everything on Auto renew but then I’d pay for names that I didn’t want to renew so I turned them all off. I have a solution that I think would make everyone happy.

What if you could reap the benefits of your name going through the expired auction? Let’s face it, trying to sell a name you own on Godaddy auctions puts you at a distinct disadvantage right off the bat. You’re trying to get eyes on your name while going up against 20-30 some thousand expiring names. The expiring names start at either 10 or 12 $, your name starts at $20 and if it sells it for $20 you’ll only get a $5 return. Who want’s to do that? Then you have the “traffic” stats that the expiring inventory has. Once the name expires the name servers are turned to Godaddy servers and visits are tracked for the time period before the auction start.

What if you could opt in to the expiring auction of your domain, let the sale go through and get a portion of the revenue? Maybe it would be slightly higher than the 20%, maybe not, but more auctions would complete, your domain would be on an equal footing with the rest of the expiring inventory, Godaddy wouldn’t lose the sale because you transferred the name to another registrar to avoid the $80 recovery fee, and the buyer gets the name they won.

Godaddy is selling the expired inventory at 100% profit, minus any infrastructure maintenance and other costs of doing business, but they’d be running that anyway. I actually think that the amount of names that sell would increase. If I have liquid domains that are on the low end of the spectrum I have an outlet to sell them and make some money, If I have higher priced inventory that I’m thinking about selling anyway I’ll let it go through the expired auction to avoid the hassle of listing it anywhere else.

With Uniregistry I can now sell names that are registered there with no commission and just a small percentage transaction fee. It’s one more thing that makes Uniregistry more and more attractive. If Godaddy had something like I’m suggesting, I’d be less inclined to transfer my name’s away, because I know that even if I forget to renew them I’d have an out, to not lose my ass on a valuable name, not to mention my names would have the same advantage and be indistinguishable from other expired inventory.

The NameJet picks probably have tons of crazy $1000-$2500 reserves, I didn’t take the time to filter them out. I’m probalby should in the future because I really don’t want to promote Buy Domains retail domain sales. Hopefully this changes soon, same thing going on that we talked about before, Buy Domains is using NameJet to promote their domains with reserves set in the range of the current BIN price on their site and Afternic. I went through the list yesterday and placed some backorders. I picked over 250 names all words or brandables, around 200 of them were owned by BuyDomains with the $1000 + reserve.

There was a post on NamePros the other day about DropCatch.com buying another 500 registrars. A few people wanted to boycott them others thought that a bigger company would buy them out eventually. I made a few comments and I’ve posted them below.

I imagine drop catching will eventually be obsolete. Goddady and NameJet don’t need to buy them or add more accreditations to beat them, they simply need to increase the number of registrars that participate in their expired auction platforms.

I pulled these numbers from the drop lists of names in an expired auction or dropping tomorrow. They’re rounded off and change daily, but you’ll get the idea.

For NameJet I’m guessing, the amount of names in pre-order is around 11K, I’m assuming a large amount of non-expired private auctions, so I adjusted the number to 7K

So using these unscientific numbers 43520 names go through an expired auction prior to the drop leaving 32980 names at registrars that do not have an expiring auction process, but even at this point we see that we’ve had a shot to own 60% of the names in Pending Delete prior to the drop.

If the registrars that make up the 32980 start participating in an expired auction process, drop catching will be obsolete. Godaddy recently added Tucows names to their platform, prior to that I think they were at snap.

This is one reason I think NameJet and Snap should lower, not raise, their starting price for pre-orders. More inventory would never make it to pending delete.

They are catching everything, Well ok, they’re catching most everything.

Just for fun sometime this week make a list of domains that you would backorder. Then after the drop just type the names one by one into your browser and see where the landing page takes you.

I did this months ago before they added the last batch of registrars, 75% of the names were caught by drop catch.

You can boycott them all you want but that isn’t going to do anything. They could care less if anyone backorders. (that might be exaggerated) Their real goal is adding names to the HugeDomains portfolio where they can be sold to endusers. In fact I bet their end user sales have doubled in the past year with the implementation of their installment sales plan.

I have a friend that recently bought a name from them for $200 a month. No outside escrow, just set up the payment plan and get access to the name.

In the last 20 days I’ve sold 5 names on BrandBucket.com. I used to think that the only names that would sell were names that had already been registered, names with age or other metrics. So many domainers talk about this a lot that I think I had my mind set on the idea.

I agree in theory that most good names have been registered, but I’ve found time and time again that there are unregistered names with value that have never been registered or that dropped a long time ago.

The main problem with hand registering these types of names is that you have nothing to measure them against other then your gut, and unless you’ve been doing it for a while there’s a good chance that your gut can be wrong. As with any concept or idea in the domain industry your “gut” is a learning process that you expand on as you grow as a domainer.

It takes looking at thousands and thousands of names everyday, watching what sells, what doesn’t and getting a feel for what makes a decent name.

I don’t bring this up so that some new domainer runs out and hand registers lot’s a crap, but rather to emphasize the real job of domainers and the value of presenting the names in the right way.

We are brand makers, innovators, guides for companies looking for a name brand or marketing domain, researchers, trend watchers, and wordsmiths. Our job is to filter through words and find combinations that sound good, are memorable and have some sort of value.

Sure, there are huge companies that know what they want and it’s a one word com that costs 6 or 7 figures, but for the vast majority of people and companies they have no or very little idea.

So we take the pay dirt that we’ve filtered out from all of the useless chaff, present it and sell it to those that don’t know the first thing about mining.

While this can happen on any sales platform, Brand Bucket does an exceptional job of matching the customers who are looking for a name with the paydirt we’ve mined.

Well look at this! Decameters.com is up for auction with one bid. If you watched the latest DomainSherpa.com you know that Shane recently sold Decimeter.com in our NameJet Auction.

In the show we learn that only Canadian sherpa’s know anything about numeric prefixes :). So if Deci is a 10th Deca is….? Yep 10, so a decameter is 10 meters.

I have an idea to make NameJet auctions better for both the buyer and the seller. There are all kinds of different domain auction models out there. It seems like each one is different, has it’s own unique characteristics and little nuances that you need to know to make your bidding more successful. In almost every domain auction process the names with the bids get more traction because even one bid adds a metric that distinguishes them from the thousands of other names.

With NameJet auctions the pre-order window ends at 23:00 eastern time, so if you find a name that you like your best bet is waiting till 22:59 to place the order. Many people do this, I have added orders at 22:59 as the first bidder and still had 6 or 7 other people order the same domain within that minute.

As a buyer it’s a way to “snipe” good names without drawing attention to them, but only if I have nothing else going on at that time. I’d love to be able to order names every night, but it doesn’t always happen. Sometimes I get busy, fall asleep or just lose track of time. For a seller this process is less than ideal, as good names that aren’t marketed somewhere can slip through with only one bid or $69.

So how do you get people to bid before the last minute of the pre-order? You need to incentivise early bidding somehow. So here’s my draft idea or a solution. The first bidder would get a $20 credit on the name if they win the name regardless of what the final price is. The second bidder would get a $10 credit towards the name. The first bid credit would be valid for bids placed no later than 24 hours before the end of the pre-order, the second bid credit valid for bids placed no later than 12 hours before the end of the pre-order. The price would remain at $69 to avoid any confusion. Here’s an example of how it would work.

Bidder A finds a good name without any bids that ends in 2 days. Bidder A makes the first bid.

Bidder B Makes the second bid a day later. Bidder A is technically winning because he placed the first bid just like it is now. Bidder C and D also place backorders for the name. The name goes to the 3 day auction and ends at $300. If bidder A wins the auction he only pays $280, if it’s bidder B he pays $290, and Bidder’s C and D would pay the full amount if they win.

This would incentivise early backorders, which would ultimately lead to higher and more sales. It would also move more names, the ones that you debate ordering because you’re not sure if they’re worth $69 wholesale, but might be worth $49.

And finally in the spirit of Christmas I wanted to offer an opportunity to help a local family that lost all of their things in a house fire. It’s actually the house that I posted a picture of in my last list, it turns out that they’re good friends of one of the guys that I work with and I even know some of their extended family. They basically lost all of their things in the fire and were renters that didn’t have renters insurance. People have been dropping clothing and other household things off at the station and a Go Fund Me account has been set up. Should they have had renters insurance? Sure, but since Christmas is a holiday that’s really about the gift of Grace and undeserved gifts, it would be nice if we could help them out a little. We went and saw Star Wars III.5 last night, also known as Rogue One. We learn how the rebels obtained the information about the weakness in the Death Star’s design. I thought it had a good plotline and was well done.

Here’s an interesting Godaddy auctions tidbit. One would think that a name at Godaddy that is listed as a premium listing would transfer into the buyers account automatically like it does most every other time, even if the name was bought through auctions and not the premium listing. You get an email saying “your premium listing has sold” either way.

The other day I sold a name and then I got a few “please transfer the domain” emails. I ignored them, because it’s not normal. Why the hell would I have to transfer the name to another godaddy account that sold through premium listings? I was skeptical that is was even a real email and possibly a phishing attack. So I responded to one of the support@godaddy emails telling me I had to transfer the name or else, and got this response.

When the Whois information for either the buy or seller has special characters, the domain will not automatically move. The domain needs to be moved to the buyer or to our holding account. You may wish to get with your Premier Services manager for assistance on moving the domain name.

What the hell does that mean and why can’t you? I certainly don’t have “special characters” in my account or it would never work. It seems weird that something that always just happens now has to be manually done by me. That’s why I’ve been cautious about doing it, not to mention a major benefit to the premium listings is not having to do anything at all, it just sells and bye bye the name goes where ever it’s suppose to go.
